Windows Workflow Foundation

From Microsoft's website

Overview

Windows® Workflow Foundation is the programming model, engine and tools for quickly building workflow-enabled applications on Windows. It consists of a Microsoft® WinFX® name space (System.Workflow), an in-process workflow engine, and designers for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. Windows Workflow Foundation is available (currently as Beta) in both client and server versions of Windows and it includes support for both system workflow and human workflow. Windows Workflow Foundation supports a wide range of scenarios including workflow within line-of-business applications, user interface page flow, document-centric workflow, human workflow, composite workflow for service-oriented applications, business rule-driven workflow and workflow for systems management.

Here you can download Beta 1 of the Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005 Extensions for Windows Workflow Foundation. This includes the Windows Workflow Foundation platform components that are required to execute workflows, it also includes the SDK for developing workflow applications and it includes the Visual Studio 2005 designers for workflow.

What rock have I been hiding under? I have heard plenty about the other WinFx components “Windows Presentation Foundation” (Avalon) and “Windows Communication Foundation” (Indigo), I thought WinFS, the new filing system was meant to be the 3rd foundation of WinFX. I don't recall hearing that there was a workflow component in the pipeline and now it is in Beta! In the past MS has had support for system workflow in the form of Biztalk server, but typically when it came to human workflow they leveraged 3rd party applications such as K2 and Teamplate. It will be interesting to see what impact WWF has on these 3rd party providers.

As with the other WinFX components it will be available with Windows Vista, but will be available as a download for WinXP and 2003 sever.
